Google AI Overviews (formerly known as SGE, Search Generative Experience) is, for most brands, the most immediately impactful part of the entire GEO ecosystem. It is not an assistant that users have to deliberately access like ChatGPT or Perplexity: it appears directly above traditional organic search results, within the search engine that billions of people already use every day.
This means that even if your SEO strategy works perfectly and you hold the number-one organic position, you may still be losing visibility if you are not cited in the AI-generated summary that appears above it. In this article, we explain how AI Overviews work and what you can do to appear in them. If you need the broader picture first, check out what is GEO.
What Are AI Overviews and How Do They Work?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google displays for a growing percentage of searches, especially informational, comparison, and “how to” queries. The system:
- Analyzes the user’s query.
- Identifies a set of relevant pages within Google’s index (it is not an external source: it uses the same traditional search index).
- Generates a synthesized summary of those pages.
- Displays links to the source pages, usually as cards or references within or alongside the summary.
The key difference compared with Perplexity or ChatGPT is that AI Overviews are built directly on Google’s search index, which means your traditional SEO performance remains extremely relevant: if you are not indexed and ranking well on Google, it is very difficult to be cited in its AI layer.
The Relationship Between Traditional SEO and AI Overviews
This is important: AI Overviews are not a discipline separate from SEO; they are an extension of it. The pages Google selects as sources for its generated summaries are often pages that already perform well organically, have good semantic structure, and show clear authority signals. That is why we say GEO does not replace SEO; it is built on top of it. Explore this relationship further in our article SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
That said, there are specific factors that increase your chances of being cited within the generated summary, beyond simply ranking well.
How to Optimize for Google AI Overviews
1. Maintain a Flawless Technical SEO Foundation
Proper indexing, page speed, mobile user experience, and clear site architecture remain the foundation. If Google cannot efficiently crawl and index your content, it will not enter the pool of candidates for the generated summary.
2. Structure Content into Direct-Answer Blocks
AI Overviews tend to extract and synthesize specific passages: a definition, a list of steps, or a comparison of options. Organize your content into sections with clear headings (H2/H3) that answer specific questions instead of using long, unstructured blocks of text. This same logic is the foundation of AEO, which we explain in detail in our article on the differences between SEO, AEO, and GEO.
3. Implement Structured Data (Schema Markup)
FAQ, HowTo, Article, and Organization markup helps Google accurately interpret the content and context of your page, increasing its eligibility for both featured snippets and AI Overviews. Learn how to implement it in schema markup for AI.
4. Strengthen Your E-E-A-T Signals
Google has explicitly stated that AI Overviews prioritize sources that demonstrate Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Identifiable authors with real credentials, cited sources, up-to-date content, and a consistent editorial history are key signals. Learn more about E-E-A-T for AI.
5. Answer Directly Before Elaborating
Place the most direct and concise answer to the main question in the first lines of each section, then develop the context and nuances afterward. Google’s extraction systems prioritize passages that provide an immediate and unambiguous answer.
6. Cover the Topic in Depth, Not Just with a Single Page
AI Overviews tend to cite sites that demonstrate comprehensive coverage of a topic, not just a single well-optimized page. Building a cluster of related, well-interlinked content—such as the one formed by this series of articles about GEO—strengthens your topical authority in Google’s eyes.
7. Do Not Block Relevant Crawlers
Although AI Overviews rely primarily on Google’s standard search index (Googlebot), it is important to review your overall robots.txt configuration to make sure you are not unknowingly restricting access for any Google system related to AI. Review the recommended configuration in AI crawlers and robots.txt.
How to Know If You Already Appear in AI Overviews
Perform searches on Google while signed in to your account for the queries most relevant to your business, and check whether an AI-generated summary appears and whether your domain is listed among the cited or linked sources. Keep in mind that AI Overviews do not appear for every search or to every user in the same way, so it is worth repeating the check periodically and, if possible, using dedicated monitoring tools. We explain how to structure this tracking in how to measure your AI visibility.
The Bridge Between Traditional SEO and the Future of Search
AI Overviews represent, better than any other engine, the exact point where traditional SEO and GEO converge. You cannot “skip” SEO and optimize directly for AI in this case: you need both at the same time, working together.
